Frequently asked questions

VFX compositing FAQs

What software do VFX compositors use?

VFX compositors use a variety of software depending on the project they're working on. However, there are some industry-standard programs such as The Foundry's Nuke and Adobe After Effects which also have powerful animation and effects tools. Other popular programs include Shake, and Flame.

What is the difference between FX and compositing?

The key difference between FX and compositing is that FX is the process of creating special effects for movies, TV shows, and video games, while compositing is the process of combining multiple images or elements to create a single image.

FX refers to visual effects that are added in post-production to create an effect that couldn't be captured during live-action filming. This could include adding computer-generated imagery (CGI), green screen effects, or using special software to simulate realistic environments.

Compositing is the process of combining multiple images or elements into a single image. This could include combining two or more live-action shots together, or adding CG elements into a live-action shot. In compositing, the term "layer" is used to describe each individual element that makes up the final image.

Is compositing a good job?

Compositing is a great career choice for creative people with strong attention to detail. It is one of the most in-demand VFX jobs (90% of CG Spectrum's advanced compositing grads are now working in the industry).

Compositors need to be able to understand the big picture of a project and also be able to focus on the small details. They need to be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. They also need to communicate well with other members of the VFX team. If you have these skills and are interested in a career in VFX, then compositing may be an excellent job for you!
